Methodology

Our Data Sources and Methodology

Real contracts. Rigorous checks. Zero guesswork. Here's how we use thousands of real business electricity contracts to show the actual prices Irish businesses pay for electricity.

Actual Contract Rates, Not Advertised Prices

Our index uses real electricity prices from business contracts arranged by Utilityfair. Fixed-price rates are taken from newly agreed contracts. Wholesale tracker rates are the actual monthly electricity prices charged under tracker contracts.

Business Contracts Only, No Domestic Meters

The index includes business electricity contracts only. Domestic electricity meters are excluded to ensure the figures reflect commercial electricity prices.

Over 1,000 Contracts Analysed Every Month

Utilityfair arranges more than 1,000 business electricity contracts each month. We use these contracts to track newly agreed fixed-price rates, alongside actual monthly rates from wholesale tracker contracts.

Prices Grouped by Meter Type and Industry

Electricity prices are grouped by meter category and industry. The four meter categories are 24-Hour, Nightsaver, Night Storage Heating and LVMD. Day and night rates are calculated separately.

Data Validation & Quality Control

We check electricity pricing data for errors, missing information and unusually high or low rates. Invalid records and non-comparable charges are excluded to keep the figures accurate and consistent.

Tracking Monthly Electricity Price Changes

We use actual electricity unit rates each month and compare them with the previous month. Fixed-price contracts and wholesale trackers are reported separately, showing how electricity prices change over time.

How We Calculate the Index

Four rules. One formula. Here's how we calculate the index.

  1. 01

    Simple average

Every contract counts equally. No volume weighting.

  2. 02

    Multiple Meters

Where they are multiple meters at one location, day and night unit rates are averaged equally.

  3. 03

    Unit rate only

Electricity prices in c/kWh, excluding VAT, standing charges and the PSO levy.

  4. 04

    Monthly Price Changes

Changes shown in c/kWh and as a percentage compared with the previous month.

The formula — worked example

(This month − Last month) ÷ Last month × 100
